Have you ever heard of Lilith? This is an ancient Jewish story referenced in several religious texts including the Bible. Lilith was the first woman with Adam: both were created by God from dust and soil. Eve was the second, more submissive woman, created from Adam’s rib. Lilith would not submit to Adam’s control. So God banished her from the Garden of Eden to Hell for saying no. She is only briefly mentioned in the Bible as “a dweller in waste places” (Isaiah 34:14) This narrative is ancient and expresses the deep effects of a patriarchal mindset. If a woman says NO she is deemed ugly, disobedient, unlawful, and demonic. I have decided to bring light to this horrible pattern, with my photographic series: The Lilith Effect. Women have been forced to protect themselves from men since the beginning of time. The tool may have changed, but the danger has not.
